Happy Home Movie Day!
Saturday, October 21st is the “official” HMD date for 2023, but like last year we welcome events throughout October and beyond – any day can be Home Movie Day! As many events have shifted back to being in-person, we’ve implemented a new calendar and submission form, all of which can be found at our About Home Movie Day page, along with lots of info about the history of global Home Movie Day and how to host your own. See you over there, and at the movies!
Join CHM and CineLimite on May 4th for “Tourist Films in Brazil: New Approaches to a National Home Movie Historiography.” In conversation with William Plotnick, co-founder of CineLimite, and Lila Foster, curator and researcher, and moderated by CHM’s Kate Dollenmayer, this panel will examine what role tourist films such as those in the Cinelimite Film Collection play in the larger national historiographical understanding of home movies in Brazil.

Cinelimite is a new New York City based non-profit organization dedicated to expanding access to the history of Brazilian Cinema in the United States and internationally. One of Cinelimite’s missions is to collect, digitize, and make freely accessible home movies that were filmed in Brazil. Over the last year, in addition to working on Brazilian family collections, the Cinelimite team has begun collecting and digitizing “tourist” films, i.e., films shot by people visiting Brazil on vacation or business trips that brought 8mm or Super 8mm cameras with them.
