Happy Home Movie Day!
Saturday, October 21st is the “official” HMD date for 2023, but like last year we welcome events throughout October and beyond – any day can be Home Movie Day! As many events have shifted back to being in-person, we’ve implemented a new calendar and submission form, all of which can be found at our About Home Movie Day page, along with lots of info about the history of global Home Movie Day and how to host your own. See you over there, and at the movies!
Home Movie Day is an international annual celebration of all things 8mm, Super 8, and 16mm (https://www.centerforhomemovies.org/hmd/). Our events in Palm Springs coincide with Modernism Week, in part, because this audience understands and appreciates the concept of preservation and is interested in our shared cultural heritage.
We invite you to go digging and bring your own home movies (found, borrowed, purloined) for inspection and projection ON ORIGINAL MECHANICAL EQUIPMENT. Trained volunteers will handle your films and give pointers on how to keep them, where to transfer them, etc. Films will be handled and shown on a first-come-first-served basis and we ENCOURAGE audience participation (film guardians are free to narrate to the best of their ability and the audience will help identify places, cars, buildings, and/or years). This is a family-friendly event and you don’t need to bring films to have fun! Play Home Movie Day Bingo for valuable-ish and locally-donated prizes. This event is FREE, but please register so we can gauge participation and estimate the number of films we will be able to handle. Now, go digging!

Come and go as you please during the 3 hours: film handling on a first come first served basis. Your Home Movie Day hosts, Palm Springs residents and film experts Melissa Dollman and Devin Orgeron, will also screen a variety of amateur film clips shot in and around Palm Springs.
Free, ticketed event. Tickets available here:https://modtix.com/f/mw22/home-movie?date=2022-02-19
Things to Know
This event is for all ages.
Currently everyone must wear a mask to enter the Library by order of the City. Conditions and requirements for Feb. 2022 are unknown at this time but we will follow any City and CDC guidelines at that time. WE will set the room to allow for socially distancing.
NOTE:
If you plan to bring films to this event, please email your Home Movie Day host: devin.orgeron@gmail.com
We will provide further, user-friendly instructions.
You may also just show up with films.
Films will be inspected, spruced up a bit, and MIGHT be projected (This is a first come, first served event — we aim to get to everyone, but turnout can be difficult to predict. This is why we want folks to email). Everyone bringing films will be given information on resources that will help them care for, preserve, and transfer these treasures.
